I pulled a lever and a swirl of chocolate and vanilla frozen yogurt filled my cup. Peak Crossing Frozen Yogurt was busy — even by Peak’s standards. There was a 15-minute lineup that curled out the door, and inside, every table was taken by an Evermore High student. But the wait was worth it for the best frozen yogurt in Colorado.

I added a scoop of crushed peanut butter cups as a topping, then placed my yogurt on the weight scale. Before Noah could protest, I snatched his frozen yogurt — birthday cake with crushed Oreo topping — and placed it on the scale beside mine.

“It’s a reward,” I said. “For completing your first day of high school.”

Noah smiled, his cheeks turning a faint pink. “When you put it like that, I have no choice but to accept.”

We left Peak’s, headed off Main Street, and found our way to the Riverwalk. I was practically jumping with excitement at the thought of spending time with Noah doing something normal. Something like what you would do with a boyfriend. Just thinking about it made me blush.

“So, did high school live up to your expectations?” I asked.

“Absolutely,” Noah said. He enjoyed a spoonful of frozen yogurt. “Everything in Evermore has exceeded my expectations. The town. The high school. And especially the people.”

If I wasn’t blushing before, I certainly was now. “It’s a pretty great town,” I said. “I’m surprised though — growing up in London, living in Los Angeles, doesn’t this place feel little, you know, small town?”

“That’s what I love about it,” Noah said. He looked out over the rippling river. “Los Angeles is one part smog, one part traffic, and one part palm trees. And London can be dreary and gray.”

“But they’re both so big. So exciting.”

“If excitement is what you want,” Noah said. “The excitement, the energy? It’s great in short bursts. Great for visits. But when you’re surrounded by it, it wears on you. Or maybe that’s just me being an introvert.”

“Believe me — being in a small town wears on you too,” I said. We took a break from walking and leaned on the railing, looking out over the river. The mountain stream was so clear you could see the smooth rocks at the bottom, and the sunlight capped the ripples with edges of gold. It felt like fall; the world smelled of rain and falling leaves.

I decided to ask one of the many questions that had been on my mind. “When you’re done shooting, do you think you’ll ever come back to Evermore to visit?”

“Absolutely,” Noah said. He smiled shyly and scuffed his sneaker on the pathway. “I must admit, I have a small confession to make.”

My fingers curled around my bowl of frozen yogurt, squeezing it a little too tight. My heart sped up. A confession? Was he about to admit the same thing that I wanted to admit — that I had a crush on him? A crush I couldn’t ignore? Was he afraid of the
